Michael Berman is a fine art and assignment marine photographer with twenty five years of experience photographing for nautical art collectors, boat builders, marine equipment manufacturers and sailing and motor boating magazines. He lives on the Olympic Peninsula near Port Townsend, Washington.

This web site features three portfolios of Michael Berman’s nautical photography and marine photography. The first portfolio showcases his fine art, black and white photographs of classic wooden schooners, sailing ships and yachts. These photographs are inspired by the historic sailing images of Rosenfeld and Beken of Cowes but are photographed in Michael’s contemporary style and printed using archival digital techniques.

The second portfolio is a series of large scale panoramic photographs of the Atlantic Ocean titled Open Ocean that were made during a sailing trip from Gran Canaria to St. Lucia. These images are “landscapes” of the sea that visually explore the vast wilderness of the open ocean, away from the obvious influences and threats of man, and examine the concept of place in an “landscape” without permanent features.

The third portfolio showcases Michael’s color commercial marine photography: helicopter aerials, boat to boat running shots and interior photographs of sailboats, motor yachts and sport fishing boats.

Martha photograph by Michael Berman used as Pacific Yachting July cover.

One of my favorite subjects, schooner Martha, won the 2013 Swiftsure inshore race beating many modern racing boats and generating some great publicity for her program. Pacific Yachting ran a nice story and put Martha on the cover!
